reading and listening

2 01 2009

I have 2 new things in my cultural life at the moment: a new music album and a new book….

Les hommes qui n'aiment pas les feemes1-  I am listening to Elbow – The Seldom seen kid. I posted one of their song a while ago called Audience with the pope. I love their CD and I want to discover their others. It is just slow pop music with hot voices. Really peaceful. Just try.

Elbow2- It is the first time I read in French since I am in London i.e. april 2006! And I read. My book shelves are full and I don’t know where to store my new ones. My parents talked to me so much about this book that I had to read it but unfortunately they have not all been translated from Swedish to English I believe. the write is Stieg Larsson and the first novel is ‘Les hommes qui n’aiment pas les femmes‘ – the english one is called ‘the girl with the dragon tatoo’. This is the first of a trilogy called Millenium.  In England, the 2nd will be published in Jan 09 and the 3rd in Jan 10!!! I can’t wait. They are all already out in France. So I read in French. I will tell you once I finished the first book.

Song of the day: Rule the world by Take That – since their come back, they are playing this song everywhere

orpheus risingI am currently reading Orpheus Rising Love, Rockets & a bloody great fish by Colin Bateman. That is an intresting book. Well written but a bit slow. Surprising from the being. It wont be my favourite but will be part of my discovery. Please give me some idea about what to read!!!!!

BTW, I go to Paris this week end. I had a free ticket from last year because I had more than an 1hrs delay! :)

the overlook by Michael ConnellySong of the day: Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

As you may be aware by now I love reading… especially reading while riding the train on my way to work. I have just finished another book (I read a few during my holidays onwards but can’t list them all). It is from one of my favorite author Michael Connelly and it’s called The Overlook.

On another matter, I had my sister over for the long week end including remembrance day (which for your information isn’t a bank holidays here but only 2 minutes of silence in the country…). It was pissing rain, it cold and windy but we had a great time. I am really happy she came visit me. She wil be always welcome, as welcome as you by the way! Please visit me more often! :P

Lisa, I’ll see you for Xmas! ;) Thanks again for your visit!

Song of the day: Out of the Ghetto from Isaac Hayes – he is dead but he was such a great singer!

I finished my book beginning of this week (Emporium by Robert Harris) and I have started Run by Jeff Abbott. I have just discovered that it is called collision in the US… Isn’t that weird??? Both countries speak the same language but the title of the book is different… :-\

Anyway, this book seems really good but I can only read on my way to work in the train these days. I am so busy at work and I am on the early shift this week that is 7 to 17 for me… :( but in less than 1 month I will be on holidays! YAY!!! :P

and another one

Song of the day: Maria by Blondie :)

During my holiday, I read. My housemate can’t stay by the pool and read but I can. My mother is a book seller for christ’s sake! So the result of my week in Greece is: 2 books read! I finished Trouble by Jesse Kellerman and almost finished The color of law by Mark Gimenez. This week I finished the latter and started Imperium by Robert Harris. hehe! :P The first one is really easy to ready but you grip it till the end. The second is a well written book about lawyer and I start the last so I will tell you later. I only know that it is an historic fiction and that seems awesome.

letter, word, sentence, paragraph, chapter, book! and so on!

Song of the day: Nationalité by Tiken Jah Fakoli – he is a really great singer from Côte d’Ivoire.

Today I finished another book. I always read on my way to/back work/home on the train and in the tube. I listen to my music from my mp3 player and read my book. I don’t hear anything, I don’t see anything! I love this moment in the morning when the world is mine in my head. I am alone. I need these 40min (lost in) transition! ;)

Anyway, now, I am beginning a new book (I always have 2 in advance). It is called Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell. This is the first one of a serie my mother loves. You know she has a book shop so I usually trust her in this matter! Mankell is a Swedish writer and his main character is Kurt Walander. I will tell you later hat I think of. Bonne lecture !

What are you reading?

Song of the day: Mama Sam by M (i.e. Mathieu Chedid)

Rain, sun, rain, gray clouds, sun, rain,… Argh! Just for the week end! :( Good time to start a new book still in my pajamas! I finished Black Jack Point by Jeff Abbott yesterday and I today start Pig Island by Mo Hayder. Reading is so good! I think I already gave you these references because that is not the first novel from them that I read.

I feel like the President of the US who has to give the list of the books he reads during his holidays. But the difference is that I really read the book I talk to you about and I don’t turn it upside down! ;)

Song of the day: Good People by Jack Johnson

Last week I finished a good book so I thought why not tell you as I have done in the past. This one is called A Quiet Belief in Angels by R.J. Ellory. The style is particular and not as easy as the other I like but is really readable by a foreigner. It talks about a boy who has suffered great losses and has seen lots of things in his youth. His past at one point catches him back…. and here come troubles. It is also a book about a boy who thinks a lot about lots of thing and has a certain life philosophy. I would really recommend this book.

Would you have any to recommend me? I am always in search for great books. The only thing is that I read in english since I am here so don’t give me a french author even if we can find some here of course. The only things I read in french are the newspapers (Google news to find the good one with a big preference for Le Monde) and Marianne as my parents have subscribe me for my xmas present.

Song of the day: Girls and Boys by Blur

journauxI hate the free newspapers! In the morning you can see stacks of newspapers everywhere and during the day you are harassed by the guys who want to give you their paper. But here in London we have London Lite, London paper, Metro and … the one you can only find here… City A.M. because even the traders have the right to get their free newspaper!

I can’t stand anymore to get the paper by force in my hand or be hit by it in my face because they want to give me their shit. Because have you ever opened one of these? There is nothing inside. Only gossip about has been or story of the murder of John Doe by his neighbor because of the flowers in John’s frontyard were whiter than his in some lost city in the north of England!!! Completely useless and pathetic.

Books are definitely better my friends!

books, books, and… livres :D

Song of the day: Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

booksI began a new book this week. It is called A kiss gone bad by Jeff Abbott. I have already read 2 of his books (Fear and Panic). He is good. Not as good as Harlan Coben (I love all his books: crime and great sense of humour) of course or Michael Connelly but he is good.

Last week I read Mo Hayden’s novel Birdman as said in one of my post. This one was terrific. On Saturday, I even bought The Treatment which is the second of hers with the same hero. I am looking forward to reading it. My next buy will be her last: Pig Island that seems superb. Can you believe that? On Saturday we went shopping with a friend and what did we buy? Clothes, shoes, handbag, jewellery, makeup… NO, nothing like this at all. We bought books!!! Unbelievable. But I can’t help it. Once I am at Waterstone’s, I HAVE to buy a book. And with those ‘buy 2, get 1 free’, you always end up buying more than you wanted.

But don’t worry, I am still a girl and I also enjoy buying girls stuff but it depends on the week! And this one wasn’t one! ;)
